The annual most beautiful Lithuanian domain name contest highlights unique domain names that include the special Lithuanian letters ą, č, ę, ė, į, š, ų, ū, and ž. This year, the contest organizers selected the fifteen most beautiful IDNs (Internationalized Domain Names), which competed for internet users’ votes on the DELFI portal.
The following domains participated in this year’s contest: aškritiškas.lt, debesėlis.lt, gūsis.lt, ignalinoskraštas.lt, juostė.lt, kaubariškis.lt, mažiejišnekučiai.lt, meška.lt, nesisėdi.lt, puoškislietuviškai.lt, stipriosšaknys.lt, šerniukai.lt, šimtaraštė.lt, šunysasistentai.lt, švietimas.lt. The domains puoškislietuviškai.lt, nesisėdi.lt, and mažiejišnekučiai.lt received the most votes from DELFI visitors and were declared the winners

They won by rallying their communities
Karolis Valiukevičius, who promotes Baltic culture and prints its symbols on various clothing items and souvenirs, has been running the family business puoškislietuviškai.lt for seven years, which this year won the contest for the most beautiful Lithuanian domain name. Karolis, who actively shared updates about his participation in the contest on social media, admits that his success in the contest was due to his persistence and the communities that actively supported his business.
Julija Jautakienė, who presents travel guides on the website nesisėdi.lt , is not only a passionate traveler who actively shares her travel experiences on social networks, but also an excellent teacher who mobilized the entire school community to vote on the DELFI portal. We are very pleased with the large support for the nesisėdi.lt project, and especially – the use of the correct Lithuanian domain name, when website visitors constantly see the letter ė in the browser address bar and links.
Dalia Gečaitė, founder and teacher at the English language school “Mažieji šnekučiai,” says she brings together a large group of children every year to learn English. The idea to start the school came after she finished her studies in English philology and saw the need to begin teaching foreign languages to preschool children. This is where the name “Mažieji šnekučiai” came from, so the domain mažiejišnekučiai.lt was a perfect fit for the school’s website.
Unique businesses and initiatives promoting Lithuanian identity
This year’s contest for the most beautiful Lithuanian internet name featured IDN domains representing particularly unique businesses and activities. One of them is the juostė.lt online store.
A native of Šiauliai who has been weaving ethnic ribbons by hand for over 20 years, Justė Lipiniskienė, who moved with her large family to a clay house she built herself in the Klaipėda district, has achieved the impossible – she has built a business selling linen clothes decorated with her hand-woven ethnographic sashes. With the help of her husband, business partner Milena Kolesinskaitė and other like-minded people, a few years ago the woman founded the online store juostė.lt, where she develops an unconventional business – selling linen clothing adorned with hand-woven sashes, a part of Lithuania’s ethnographic heritage.
Evelina Viktorija Žemeikytė, who is interested in genealogy, has not only immersed herself in researching the culture and traditions of her ancestors, but has also created a website stipriosšaknys.lt , dedicated to genealogy. Evelina, who gives lectures on how to create a family tree and where to find information about Lithuanian ancestry, is active not only on social media but also diligently updates her website with new information and event announcements.
The folk dance group based at the Ramučiai Cultural Center in the Kaunas District did not choose its name by chance. “Gūsis” is not just a name, but also a feeling that these people embody. That is why they did not hesitate to register the domains gūsis.lt and gusis.lt, so that it could be easily found online by alumni of student ensembles and all lovers of folk art.
The most important thing is the mission
Irina Liubertė, who helps people with disabilities find service dogs and is the initiator of the šunysasistentai.lt project, insists that a domain name with special Lithuanian characters is a necessity, even though she is forced to compromise due to restrictions on the use of IDN domains on social media and even in government systems. However, when saying the website address šunysasistentai.lt on the phone, it is much more understandable than sunysasistentai.lt
Another participant of the most beautiful Lithuanian domain name contest, the švietimas.lt project, which carries out a special mission for society, sets itself ambitious goals – to ensure that every Lithuanian child has access to the best education in Europe. Greta Jankaitytė, the project’s communications manager, recalls that after purchasing the svietimas.lt domain, the švietimas.lt domain was also registered, which is actively used when saying the address on radio and television.
Other paricipant of the most beautiful Lithuanian domain name contest gave his water supply and sewage network construction business a playful name - “Šerniukai”, and for his representative website he uses a .lt domain with the special Lithuanian letters - šerniukai.lt .
According to Mindaugas Norvaiša, the manager and founder of the small partnership “Šerniukai”, coming up with a unique name for the business was not an easy task, as many potential names were already used in company names, domain names or trademarks. After checking the name “Šerniukai” on the websites of the „Registrų centro“ , the State Patent Bureau of the Republic of Lithuania and the accredited .lt registrar „Hostinger“ and being convinced that the name was available and would not cause any conflicts in the future, Mindaugas immediately registered the company, domain and trademark “Šerniukai”. In order to further protect the name on the Internet, he not only registered the domain serniukai.lt, but also its correct equivalent with the special Lithuanian letter š, which is used to host the website šerniukai.lt
To commemorate the most beautiful domain names – laureate diplomas
We presented the participants of contest with diplomas for fostering Lithuanian identity on the Internet and using the .lt domain with special Lithuanian letters and wished success in developing unique businesses and activities.
The organizers of the contest – the Lithuanian Computer Society (LIKS), Kaunas University of Technology (KTU) Internet Service Center DOMREG, the State Commission of the Lithuanian Language (VLKK), the INFOBALT Association and accredited .lt registrars „Interneto vizija“ , „Hostinger“ and „Domenai.lt“ hope that we will see more and more domains in Lithuania that are used correctly, with the special letters of the Lithuanian language.
